Like the intake system, the stock exhaust system is a compromise that favors lower noise levels. For a turbocharged car, the less restrictive the exhaust tubing, the easier it is to generate power.
The first step in building a less-restrictive exhaust system is to replace the exhaust tubing after the catalytic converter. 'Cat-back' exhaust systems consist of larger-than-stock pipe after the catalytic converter, and a special low-restriction muffler.
